Favourite Winter Outfit + Tips

Monday, January 11, 2021
Today's post is featuring one of my favourite winter knitwear items from the past couple of weeks as well as a few basic winter styling tips from a petite, lazy dresser! I used to publish quite a few clothing posts but I've stopped as I focused on a wider range of topics but it's great to publish posts like these occasionally, particularly when I have a very cute jumper to rave about.

*Awesome Jade Gala Pom-Pom Sweater in Grey ($42 - currently on sale)
I was very kindly gifted a gorgeous jumper from Awesome Jade which is a new-to-me online clothing store with an amazing range of unique clothing. There are so many items on their site that I loved but I opted for this jumper as it is absolutely freezing in England right now and I don't own a jumper like it! I was torn between this jumper and the beautiful Acne Wide Sleeves Pink Cardigan - it was a very difficult decision.
The jumper also comes in white, purple and pink, all of which look so cosy but grey is one of my favourite shades as to me it is just such a cosy and flattering shade. The Gala jumper features cute pom pom details on the front, longer length lantern sleeves and unique long cable knit cuffs. All of the jumpers I own are for comfort and cosiness but this one combines cosiness with cute details that makes it look a little unique and special. I adore the design and colour of this jumper and I know that I will get a lot of use out of it over the next couple of months of winter.

I have the size small (I'm a UK size 8, close to a UK 10) which fits me perfectly and the length of the jumper is great too. I am very petite at only 4ft 11 so most jumpers are a little too long on me but the length of this one is fantastic. Additionally, the quality is great and the jumper itself is very smooth, soft and cosy but it isn't very bulky or heavy. Overall, I couldn't be happier with the jumper, from the cute design and the super soft material to the fantastic fit. The delivery time was a little longer that I thought it would be but I didn't have to wait too long for the jumper to arrive. I'd recommend checking out their site to have a look at their gorgeous items, especially the knitwear.
Lastly, I just wanted to mention a few basic winter styling tips which if you are in the UK, could be very useful as we've had awful, freezing weather and snow over the past couple of weeks! Also, winter is my least favourite season but I think that these tips and all of the cosy clothing definitely helps me get through the bleakest season.

  • Layering: add t-shirts under jumpers, jumpers over skirts or sweaters over maxi dresses
  • Thermals: thermal t-shirts and cosy fleece leggings are ideal for winter
  • Warm accessories: cosy beanies, soft scarves, knitted gloves and handwarmers
  • Cosy socks: layer cosy, fluffy socks under boots for added warm and comfort
  • Coats: invest in a good winter coat to see you through the season

What do you think of my jumper? Do you have any winter styling tips?

Anxiety + Relaxation Helpers

Saturday, January 09, 2021
The end of 2020 and start of 2021 was filled with anxiety for me, not just about the current pandemic but a few negative and anxiety inducing things happened that caused me to fall into an anxiety slump for the past couple of weeks. While I still have moments of anxiety every few days that cause me to pace constantly, worry and feel sick, it is definitely better than it was a couple of weeks ago so I wanted to share a few of the products and tips that helped me.

Do Something
The first tip if you have an anxious, racing mind is to do something, anything! I have personally found that organising and doing jobs around the house, talking to someone, reading a new book and going for a walk have all helped so much especially when my thoughts won't stop spiralling. Also make time to cook, eat and watch a comfort TV show!
Supplements or CBD
CBD claims to help many issues and have various benefits such as helping with overall wellbeing, sleep problems, anxiety and stress, the latter three I've definitely been struggling with recently. I have been sent this CBD oil and trying the *Natural Works 10% CBD Oil (£40) on and off for the past couple of weeks (always do your own research before taking any kind of supplement and if you are unsure, ask your doctor before taking anything). Their CBD oil is vegan friendly, 100% natural and is derived from organic Swiss grown hemp. Thankfully the oil doesn't have any flavour which is something I prefer for supplements and I haven't noticed any negative effects.

Research into the effects of CBD is still currently taking place and more research is needed in the future. I personally feel as though it does help me feel a little bit less anxious and stressed but that is just my personal experience and I will definitely need to try it for a longer period of time to see if there are other results or benefits. If you are interested, they do have a code to get 25% off for veganuary on their website so you can check it out along with their very useful information about CBD.

Deep Breathing and 3-3-3 Rule
A couple of other useful tips I've found recently is to try and focus on deep breathing and nothing else; although sometimes when my thoughts are too strong this doesn't work for me and I have to try and distract myself further. When these moments happen, I find that the 3-3-3 rule helps massively which involves noting three things around you, three things you can hear and three parts of your body - I find this process to be very grounding.

Anxiety is such a personal struggle and everyone deals with it in different ways such as yoga, mediation, exercise, trying new hobbies and seeking help, whatever works for you. I have just listed a few tips and products that have been helping me recently although I know it will be something I will probably have to deal with on and off throughout my life, these tips have been very beneficial for me. If you have any tips, leave them in the comments below.

Have you tried CBD? If you suffer with anxiety, do you have any tips?

How To Create The Perfect Cosy Night In

Sunday, December 27, 2020
Winter is here and with it comes dark nights, cold temperatures and dull weather (that is pretty much the norm in Manchester all year round) but it also means that we have the excuse to for many cosy nights in (with your household or bubble). It is admittedly my least favourite time of the year, however there are many ways in which to make it more bearable such as cosy nights in, comfort food, movie days and a valid reason to buy all of the hygge inspired homeware your want including candles, sweet treats, throws and bedding.
Today's post is all about my tips and personal recommendations to create the perfect cosy night in and the ingredients you will need are as follows: snacks (lots of them!), warm beverages of your choice, movies or TV and cosy bedding or throws. I think that the perfect cosy night in requires all of those elements but you can pick and choose or add in items you love as well - cuddly pets would be ideal.

The lovely people at Dusk created a little experiment to see which foods and beverages create the most mess and spills on bedding - a highly scientific and useful experiment, I think we will all agree. They found that nachos were the messiest snack and difficult to clean too and tea/biscuits came in at second place. Chocolate bars and crisps were the least messy and easier to clean so choose your snacks wisely!

TV and movies are also essential, I've been watching good old favourites on Netflix; the TV recently has been awful so I've almost exclusively been watching movies and TV shows on streaming services. In addition to TV and movies, you could also add boardgames and pampering products or even a FaceTime quiz to your cosy night in.
*Dusk Chelsea Duvet Cover - White (from £31.80)
My final cosy night in essential has to be cosy and warm bedding as well as a knitted throw! Dusk have a wide range of gorgeous bedding in a range of styles, colours and sizes, so you are bound to find something cosy to suit your home. I was kindly gifted their Chelsea duvet cover, pillow cases and a gorgeous throw - they are all currently on sale so go, go, go.

The Chelsea duvet is 200 thread count cotton (which is breathable and very soft) and it is a classic style with delicate stitched detailing which makes it look quite luxe and expensive! The duvet is so incredibly soft and cosy, it is so much better in terms of quality than all of my others so I now know where to purchase my bedding from in the future.

*Dusk Chelsea Oxford Pillow Cases - White (from £16.20)
The pillow cases are equally as amazing in terms of design and quality as well as how super soft they are! I also love the extra hem (I'm not sure if that is the correct term) and stitching around the edges of the duvet and the pillow cases - they look extra fancy with just that little touch. The cosiest bedding is the ideal accompaniment to a cosy night in, as is a knitted throw.

*Dusk St Ives Throw - Light Grey (£73.80)
A few years ago I arm knitted my own throw and the process wasn't very difficult, however the quality wasn't amazing and it began to fall apart very quickly - although I'm still fairly proud of my first complete knitted item. A pre-made knitted throw is definitely the easier and quick option; it will also last much longer! I have the light grey colour but there are others available, all of which look very cosy and unique. I think a soft, oversized knitted throw is a fantastic addition to any home (or cosy night in) during the colder months as it makes any room look instantly more inviting.

You can find out more information about Dusk bedding on their website and don't forget to check out their blog for more information on their 'Netflix and spill' food experiment!

*Preparing For The Future

Friday, December 18, 2020
Image from World Market
Sponsored Post (AD)

The end of 2020 is almost here and it has prompted me to start thinking about my goals for 2021 as well as future plans and saving money. I am a chronic over thinker and planner so preparing for the future would sound like a task I'd enjoy but alas, it fills me with dread and uncertainty which is something we've all had enough of this year. However, as I approach my thirties, I do need to prepare and plan ahead. Today's post is focusing on a few options and ideas to help prepare for the future and save money; as always if you have any advice or tips, leave them in the comments below.

Savings Account + Manage Your Money
Starting a saving account and learning to manage your money is a great first step. Recording your spending, whether in a journal or spreadsheet, is an easy visual way to see your spending habits and from there you can try to identify ways to cut your spending. I find it very easy to justify numerous small treats but when I list them throughout the month, the small amounts add up and that is definitely an area of my spending that I need to control. Visiting comparison sites for utilities/insurance, looking for better deals, buying in bulk and opting for cheaper alternatives are a few more options to potentially save money.

Funeral Care + Life Insurance
Life insurance and funeral care is not something any of us want to think about especially in 2020 but it is necessary to prepare for the future. Heart of England funeral care offer a wide range of pre-paid funeral plans which is an affordable way to pay for the cost in advance and have personal wishes recorded. Further information is available on their website.

Extra Projects + Studying Online
Earning extra money through side projects or your hobbies (anything from cake making, creating illustrations, making jewellery or blogging) might be a great additional source of income as well as a way of improving your skills. Studying online, whether through university or free online courses (via Future Learn, for example) can demonstrate determination and passion for a certain career you may be working towards or it may help your job prospects in the future.

Do you have any tips for saving money or planning for the future?

*Ultra-Convenient Gifts For The Person You Love

Thursday, December 17, 2020
This is a collaborative post (AD - paid)

Do you have a special somebody in your life? If so, then you’re probably often thinking hard about what gifts you can get them. There’s just a small problem: giving them something convenient is always a challenge. After all, you’re often so busy, you don’t have time to walk around, browsing various gifts in the stores. You’re too busy with the rest of your life. Fortunately, there are solutions to this little conundrum in the modern world. Let’s take a look at some of your options.

Home Meal Delivery
Think about the amount of time that the average person spends shopping for groceries, preparing meals, and looking up recipes. The process never ends. And it’s a massive drain on their time, especially if they don’t enjoy it. But what if there was a solution? What if there was another way to get good food into your body without all the usual hassle? Well, it turns out that there is, and it’s called the home meal delivery kit. The way it works is simple. You pay a subscription and then a company will deliver bags of food to your address with all the ingredients you need in just the right proportions to make food. No more guessing. No more looking up recipes. No more buying more food than you need. Just simple, fresh meals prepared every night. Think about the convenience and health benefits this will offer your partner.

Flower Delivery
Food not your partner’s thing? Not to worry. What about flowers? It turns out that you can now get Valentine's day flower delivery. You don’t even have to go to the store - which isn’t a bad thing during a pandemic. You just select flowers that you think they’d like and then somebody will bring them to you, saving you time. Flowers are a great gift because of what they represent. It’s all about beauty and new life - the center of most happy and functional relationships.

Fruit Preparation Multitool
Preparing fruit usually requires that you have a bunch of tools. Apple corers, peelers, graters, skewers, knives - you name it. But if your partner’s kitchen has limited storage, you don’t want all those tools cluttering it up. Fortunately, you can now get fruit multitools that collect all these implements in a device that looks a bit like a penknife. You just fold out the tool you need and then put it away when it’s no longer useful.

Reusable Roller
Nothing is more annoying than spending a lot of money on clothes and furniture, only to find it covered in annoying lint. Carrying a lint roller around with you all the time isn’t practical. But these days you can buy compact, portable versions that you can take with you wherever you go. Most are about the size of a flashlight and can fit in your carry bag with relative ease. Then they just fold out, allowing you to use them while you’re out of the house (or in it for that matter). Most come with recyclable adhesives you can rip off and replace.

Do you have any very practical or convenient gift ideas?

*How To Monetise Your Blog

Sponsored post (AD)

Starting a blog is exciting – talking about your thoughts and everything that makes you happy, meeting people with the same likes and dislikes and creating your own little corner of the internet. It’s even more exciting when you start making a little bit of money from it, I mean… who wouldn’t like to make some extra money doing what they love? If you have a blog and are curious to know how to make some money from it, let me get right to it. And for some extra tips, I’ve partnered up with Magento eCommerce agency in London Ad Lab, who work with bloggers and businesses all across the country.

Run relevant ads
Devon Mamma recommends running Google AdSense ads. “Google AdSense is a free, quick and simple way to display ads on your blog and in turn, earn money when people interact with those ads. Plus, the ads will be relevant to your blog and audience and if you are not happy with an ad, you can easily block it.” Display ads are an easy way to earn some passive income from your blog. These ads, also known as banner ads, can appear on the sides, top and on the bottom of your blog.

Create an online store
Perhaps your blog is all about your handmade jewellery or about health and fitness, why not create an online store to sell your own products related to your content? Or maybe simply create a store to sell merchandise, your upcoming book and other products which you might have.

The team at Ad Lab recommend creating an online store on WordPress or Magento platforms. Both are great platforms that offer great user interface and plenty of features to take advantage of. They highlight the importance of a stunning and easy-to-use website. So, take some time when creating your store to make it as clean and sleek as possible! If you need some inspiration, browse Ad Lab’s portfolio of award winning websites at awwwards

Once you’ve created your online store, it’s time to start gaining visibility and promoting it to attract customers and generate sales. Ad Lab recommend promoting your brand and products on social media as well as partnering up with other creators to expand your audience. Podcasts are one of Ad Lab’s favourite ways of getting people to talk about their services and increasing traffic to websites – check out James Sinclar’s business podcast that featured Ad Lab’s director David Newman

Sell your blogging skills
As you are well aware, there are plenty of skills you will acquire from blogging – from writing to photography and social media management. My Fashion Life mentions that if you have these skills, you should offer them businesses who need them as well as add a “Hire Me” page on your blog where you showcase the services you offer.

Earn commissions from products you love
This is what affiliate marketing is all about! If you are passionate about certain products and would recommend them to anyone and everyone, affiliate marketing is for you. Life with Baby Kicks says that “when you are starting out, affiliate marketing is one of the most popular methods to make money.”

There are many affiliate programmes you can join, including Amazon Affiliates. All you have to do is join one of these programmes, recommend products you love to your audience with a special link and when people purchase these products via your link, you get a commission from that sale! Easy, peasy!

These are simply some of the ways you can monetise your blog. As this article on the Entrepreneur puts it, “there are numerous ways to monetise your content and make money from your blog, but don't try to take shortcuts along the way. Don't look for the fast-buck if you're serious about your long-term results. Take action and stay persistent if you want to succeed and achieve your goals.”

What other ways do you use to monetise your blog?

*How To Choose The Right Jewellery For A Partner

Wednesday, December 09, 2020

Collaborative post (AD)

Christmas is coming up and one of the best things about Christmas (besides the love and magic) is the art of gift-giving. For some people, shopping is done months in advance and they are wrapped and ready in the closet to go under the tree by November. For others, last minute shopping is the art here! One of the loveliest gifts that you can give another person is jewellery. Everyone appreciates a little sparkle under the tree. Learning the history of Tiffany & Co before you get shopping is a nice way to give the jewellery a little back story when you hand it over, too. So, here is how you can choose the right jewellery for a partner.

  • Don't start with buying what you want - buy what they want. Get to know the type of jewels your partner would prefer. If they don't wear earrings, then don't buy them as it's likely you could buy earrings for someone who hasn't ever had their ears pierced. Perfection is subjective, so getting something you know THEY would love over what you would love is important.

  • Look. Ask. Notice. If you don't know what sort of jewellery would be good for your partner, then you need to start looking at them more and noticing what they do and don't wear. Body language makes up a big piece of the way that we communicate with our partners, and so go by the jewellery store and take notice about where their eyes light up. This level of attention is going to be appreciated!

  • Choose a piece of jewellery that'll mean something. Is your partner particular about birth stone jewellery? Choose a ring or a necklace with their birthstone. If you choose your jewellery to be what you know they will enjoy, you're going to have given a gift that matters.

  • Can't analyse? Look at their current jewellery stash! Go through their bureau or desk and see what they like to wear regularly. Then check out their clothes and look at the colours that they use the most. Visualise them in the jewellery you've got in mind and if it suits them, go for it. Jewellery is never going to be a disappointing gift, especially if your budget allows you to buy in Tiffanys!

  • Sometimes, going shopping with their closest friend could be the answer to your problem. Take their best friend shopping and ask them to help you choose. Don't make them pick the gift, but get their input. If you don't have the time, ask their bestie to figure out what jewellery your partner likes on the down low!

  • No matter what happens, you're about to give your partner an absolutely beautiful gift. You can ensure that you choose something pretty, sparkly and convenient. Try to stay away from giant jewellery pieces if you know she's not into that. Sometimes, the smaller jewels are the better option.

A gift is supposed to make the recipient feel good. Choose your jewellery piece wisely, and you won't be disappointed by their reaction! Do you have any tips for buying jewellery for others?

*Give The Gift Of Relaxation This Christmas

Tuesday, December 08, 2020

This is a collaborative post (AD)

Christmas is fast approaching but it isn't too late to select the perfect gift for friends and family. While Christmas this year cannot be normal, it doesn't mean that you can't give a thoughtful gift or the gift of an experience to look forward to in the new year; I think we all need something happy to focus in 2021 as this year has been quite the chaotic rollercoaster.

While I love to gift personalised presents and practical gifts, I think that giving the gift of an experience, whether it is a lesson, day trip, afternoon tea or a spa day, is a lovely gift that is not only luxe and thoughtful but it is a great way to create new and special memories too. I have personally loved receiving gifts that involve time with friends or family more than physical gifts. This year has demonstrated just how much we may take for granted the time we spend with each other over the festive period and special celebrations.
Spa Breaks
One of the most luxurious and indulgent gift experiences, in my opinion, has to be a spa day. A spa day with close family or friends is surely the epitome of relaxation and me-time, which is something we all deserve after everything 2020 has had in store. There are so many spa day options across the country including one night spa breaks in Yorkshire with Titanic Spa which offer a wide range of spa day packages and treatments to choose from.

Many of us haven't been able to spend time abroad this year so a spa day and short overnight stay is a great way to not only relax with numerous indulgent spa treatments but also to have a short time away from it all. The overnight spa breaks with Titanic Spa include a luxury apartment which can be shared with up to six guests, various meal options and access to the leisure club and swimming pool as well as the  relaxation lounge, along with numerous activities and facilities upon booking.

Prices depend on the package selection and range from £139 per person to £229 per person. Naturally due to the current pandemic, only one household (unless in a support bubble) can use each apartment and there are Covid guidelines to be aware of. However, spa packages sold as a voucher provide the flexibility to change the date of your booking. Gift voucher options range from monetary vouchers to specific spa days, treatment vouchers, alternative therapy vouchers and spa break options. Check out Titanic Spa and their wonderful range of spa breaks and give the gift of relaxation this Christmas.

What do you think of the treatments and spa breaks available with Titanic Spa? Would you like to receive a spa break voucher this Christmas?

October + November Favourites 2020

Sunday, December 06, 2020

As the end of the year is approaching, I'm thinking about all of the products that I've loved throughout 2020 (my 2020 favourites posts will be live at the end of the month) and I realised that I haven't published my October and November favourites yet. Despite my freelance work being very slow this year and not wearing makeup as much as I used to, I've actually found quite a few amazing products this year that I can't wait to rave about very soon. Today's post features a variety of skincare products as well as makeup, supplements, tea and a beautiful necklace that are my stand out products from the past couple of months.

*Magnitone Facial Steamer
As the weather is becoming very wintery, let's begin with a couple of winter warming products, the first is a cute facial steamer from Magnitone. I adore the Magnitone cleansing cloths, I've been using them constantly for a couple of years now so I was happy to try another product of theirs (which I received as part of my wellness collaboration with Very). Until I received this product I hadn't tried a facial steamer since primary school and it definitely bought back memories of using a facial steamer with Spice Girls playing in the background.

Thankfully this one is far less messy than my previous steamer from the early 00's! It is surprisingly quick and easy to use and it has been a great first step in my pampering skincare routine. I use the steamer for ten minutes (with breaks in-between) and follow with a hydrating mask then a facial oil, eye cream and moisturiser for a moisture boosting routine that my skin desperately needs during the colder months. If you're looking for a skincare gift for yourself or someone else, then this facial steamer might be a great option.

*Teapro Subscription
I also wanted to highlight a unique subscription box that would make an ideal winter warming gift this Christmas! The Teapro tea subscription box contains four packets of tea per month based on a specific theme, along with educational information to help you (or your gift recipient) become a tea-pro. Additionally, with your first box you will receive a three piece tea cup and strainer (which is the only tea cup I've been using as it is just so handy to have everything in one). I think it is such a great idea and I've been loving trying the different tea varieties, all of which I wouldn't have tried if it wasn't for the Teapro subscription box.
Benefit Ka-Brow (4.5)
There are two makeup items I've been using non-stop recently, the first is a cream-gel brow colour from Benefit in the shade 4.5. The one makeup product I've used throughout the entirety of the year and throughout both lockdowns, have been brow products. I like no-makeup days but even then I always add a little brow product, otherwise I'll look like a babyfaced teenager! I adore the Barry M Brow Wand, Maybelline Total Temptation and Maybelline Brow Precise pencils but for a softer option I have been reaching for Ka-Brow. While the shade isn't dark enough for me, it is a very quick and easy product to use that leaves my brows looking fuller, filled in and more structured without harsh lines or overly 'drawn on' brows. It is the most foolproof brow product I've tried and I will be purchasing another in a darker shade soon.

*Elemis Superfood Glow Priming Moisturiser
If you are looking for a glow boosting moisturiser that also doubles as a highlighting primer then look no further that the radiance boosting priming moisturiser from Elemis. I previously reviewed and raved about this product in my wellbeing post with Very and I've loved it ever since. The moisturiser gives the most wonderful, refreshing glow without looking greasy or glittery. It is great on it's own or applied underneath a base for a well rested and awake complexion.
*Gold Collagen - Vegan Plant Based Liquid Supplement (£74, one month supply)
Moving onto a few health related items, the first being a new and delicious supplement from Gold Collagen. Their famous supplement is now available as a vegan friendly option which is fantastic. I first tried the supplement drink as part of a previous Latest In Beauty box and I've been very kindly sent a supply to test out. The drink contains 28 active nutrients including Vitamin B12, rice peptides, folic acid, plant and fruit extracts, sodium hyaluronate and much more to help maintain normal hair, skin and nails.

The drink itself has a very fruity and sweet flavour that I wasn't expecting but I do like the flavour; however I don't think it will be a hit for everyone. I've been consuming one drink (almost) everyday for the past couple of weeks and while I think it has been helping, especially as a vegan diet could be deficient in some of the nutrients included in the supplement, it will require continued use to see more results. Overall, I think it is a great option to try if you are vegan and want a supplement drink to support your diet and improve your hair, skin and nails.

*Luna & Leaf CBD Oil
Another health related item I've been experiencing positive results with is the 30% CBD oil from Luna & Leaf which I have already posted a full review of on my blog. I only have one negative point to mention about this oil - the packaging does seem to leak and waste a portion of the oil (it might just be mine that has experienced this issue). However, despite that issue I have noticed the oil has a calming effect which in turn has been helping my anxiety to an extent. Although I will need to use it continuously and for a longer period of time to see if there are more or lasting positive effects.
*NeuroSkinFeeds The MicroOil (£49)
Moving onto a couple of skincare favourites. The autumn and winter months always test my skin and usually that means persistently dry skin; thankfully I don't experience eczema on my face anymore so it isn't as much of a problem but my skin still needs a little extra boost at this time of the year. The Micro Oil from NSF is packed with vegan friendly rich skin nourishing ingredients to help calm the skin, add moisture, protect against sun exposure and reduce the signs of premature ageing.

I've been using the oil during the day, before my moisturiser, if my skin is very dry and uncomfortable or as part of my evening winter skincare routine. The oil has a subtle floral scent that is very pleasing and while it has the rich texture of an oil, it does absorb fairly quickly leaving my skin feeling nourished, comfortable and moisturised which is exactly what it needs during the cold winter months.

*Glowlixir Mask
Lastly for skincare is another moisture boosting product and one that after using a couple of times per week for the last month or so, has definitely been helping (alongside the oils and hydrating products I've been using), to keep dryness to a minimum. The mask contains lots of natural and cruelty free ingredients to hydrate, soften and smooth the skin. I adore the packaging, it is a quick and easy product to use and it has definitely been giving my skin a much needed moisture boost. It is a fantastic addition to my current skincare routine!

*Wolf & Gypsy Sixpence Necklace
For my final favourite I wanted to include the Wolf and Gypsy sixpence necklace which I've been wearing constantly since I received it; I have reviewed the necklace fully in a previous post. I adore the minimal but beautiful design, it is a perfect casual but sophisticated necklace and I think it would make a luxe gift this Christmas (or a treat for yourself as 2020 has been quite a year!).

Have you tried any of these products? What have you been loving recently?

*Top 5 Tips on How to Run a Successful Business

Friday, December 04, 2020
Image from papernstitch blog
Collaborative post (AD)

Starting a business is one thing, and running it is another. Running a successful business requires vast knowledge from research. You will also need to make plans and change strategies along the way, all of which can be a bit too overwhelming. With many books and journals written on this broad subject, this article narrows it down to a few top tips that you can consider to run your business successfully.

Have a business plan
All your thoughts, professional goals, workflows, and anything necessary, should be written down on a formal business plan. A business plan will assist in ensuring consistency and collaboration with every stakeholder when stored as a living document in the cloud. A written business plan not only helps in formalities and setting goals but also for future references. You will be in a position to determine where mistakes are and change strategies if need be.

Understand your market and have clear KPLs
Running a successful business requires that you conduct detailed and careful market research. From this, you will get concrete data on potential customers, your existing competition, market trends, and the expected demand and growth of your business. Consider the 8 Ps; price, product, place, people, performance, physical evidence, process promotion that will guide in your market research, customer personas, and help you create an excellent jumping-off point.

Set profitability goals and revenue
A successful business requires that you make enough money to make a profit, sustain operations, and re-invest for future developments. As a business owner, you need to factor in business costs including those of staff, sourcing, capital, and production. Determine how much returns your business should make quarterly, monthly, and annually for it to succeed. As you run your business, revisit your pricing structure regularly to ensure it thrives.

Implement proper growth strategy tools
Identify and make use of tools that will assist in optimizing your business. There are several apps, products, SEO, and SaaS solutions that are available and growing exponentially. If you're working at home and online, you must get a physical address for your virtual business so that clients and vendors can locate and communicate with you. The cost of technology is slowly decreasing, thereby giving you a wide variety to choose from. Work with tools that perform specific tasks, ensure that it is scalable, and offers value for your money.

Hire qualified staff and keep them motivated
If your business requires employees, hire those that have expertise in areas that you don't. Don't try and do everything by yourself. Involve them in decision making as it will have a direct impact on them. Ensure that they understand the goals and objectives of your business. This way, they will invest greatly and make more informed, better decisions. Building a strong team will require that you keep them motivated so that they can perform effectively. Consider benefits like time off, worker's compensation, and unemployment insurance, and taxes.

Bottom Line
Running a business is a continuous process of learning and making changes. To be successful, you need to understand the basic business essentials. Have a plan, hire the right staff, understand your market, set revenue and profitability goals, and implement tools for your growth strategy.

Do you own your own business or is it something you'd consider in the future?

*DIY Christmas Decorations with Design Bundles

Collaborative post (AD)

Happy December! Christmas is fast approaching but there's still time to create beautiful festive decorations for your home and tree, Christmas cards for friends and gifts for all the family with Hobbycraft and Design Bundles. Today's post is all about what you can create with a few simple tools, crafting supplies, Design Bundle graphics and a little glitter - you can't have Christmas without glitter. If you've been following me on Instagram (@ofbeautyand), you may have already seen some of my creations.

Let's start with my Christmas crafting haul from Hobbycraft! The *HobbyCraft LED Dome (£3) was one of the items from their festive range that I was most excited to receive and transform. I thought it could look very festive with gold paint, *Hobbycraft Mini Trees (£2 for 12), a little cotton wool and naturally, glitter. I'm so happy with the way it turned out and I think it would make a great festive/winter crafting project (or finished as a homemade gift) especially as the price is so low.

Hobbycraft has been my favourite place for crafting supplies and it has been for many years. One of my favourite things about Hobbycraft, along with their prices, is the selection of very inexpensive items that you can easily transform such as the *Hobbycraft Mini Wooden Decorations (£2 each) and the *Hobbycraft Mache Hanging Decorations (£1 each) that I think would be perfect as craft projects for children. They were both very easy to decorate with *Pebeo Matte Paint (£2 each) and it provided such a lovely mindful morning activity. Crafting in general is such a meditative, peaceful past time or hobby and the festive season is the ideal time to try new crafts either to give as gifts or to decorate your home and tree.
The first decorations I made were the mini wooden decorations which I bought two of but Hobbycraft have a selection available to choose from. I think they are absolutely adorable and I love the colour scheme of green, red and pink as suggested on the Hobbycraft website - it gives a cute take on the traditional Christmas colour palette. I also added a little sparkle with a silver permanent marker and silver glitter as snow on the rooftops and trees which looks very pretty as it reflects the light. It would make a great mini decoration for your home if you are limited with the space for decorations, if you want to keep your decorations minimal or if you want to stick to a homemade theme this year.
Wreaths are some of my favourite Christmas decorations, along with lights and LED domes, as I think they are perfect not just for Christmas but winter as well. Wreaths are a great way of adding in greenery and flowers (whether they are real or artificial) to your home at this time of the year, particularly if you don't have the space for a christmas tree. The *Hobbycraft Artificial Fir Wreath (£5) was very inexpensive, easy to decorate and it looks very festive on the wall.

I used *Hobbycraft White Grape Hyacinth Pieces (£2), *Hobbycraft Holly Picks (£2) and dried metallic potpourri to decorate my wreath - I love the minimally decorated look as well as the pink ribbon to add in a twist to the traditional festive colours of the wreath. I think the price is amazing as the wreath is huge and well made so it could last for quite a few festive seasons to come. It would make a lovely festive gift, a beautiful festive decoration or a large table centrepiece for Christmas Day.
*Design Bundles
Lastly, I wanted to share my experience using the site Design Bundles and their amazing selection of illustrations, templates, Merry Christmas SGV files, photographs, bundle deals and much more. I was very kindly given credit to spend on the website and I was spoilt for choice as there are so many beautifully designed bundles to choose from. I wanted to try one of the bundles as they offer so much possibility for crafting. The bundles are also amazing value for money as you receive a tonne of various graphics that you can mix and match to make all kinds of festive creations.

I chose the absolutely beautiful *Charming Christmas Bundle from designer Tabitzan (£15.01) which contains so many amazing pre-made and individual illustrations so you can make your own Christmas cards, name cards, invitations, gift toppers, gift tags and much more. Everything in the bundle is downloaded onto your device as pre-made items (such as greeting cards) as well as individual graphics so you can design your own cards or gift tags, for example.

I used a couple of the beautiful designs to make Christmas cards and with the gorgeous village map design,  I created a large print to decorate the *Hobbycraft Large Gift Bags (£3.50 for a pack of five) which I think looks very cute and unique. I've only shown a couple of ways to use them but there are so many ways to use the adorable illustrations; for example, you could make 3D cards by layering the illustrations with raised foam stickers, create personalised gift tags using the illustrations and trying your hand at calligraphy or you could create a few festive prints to hang around your home for the Christmas period. The options are endless and there are a tonne of amazing illustrations, graphics, photographs and bundles (all at amazing prices) on Design Bundles so check them out!

My CBD Experience with Luna + Leaf

Monday, November 30, 2020

CBD seems to have been the 'it' health and beauty ingredient of the year and it is easy to see why as it has rather fantastic claims and properties. I've reviewed CBD coffee on my blog previously and I've tried a couple of skincare products that include CBD as an active ingredients (both of which I loved) but I have never tried a CBD oil or supplement, until now.

What is CBD? CBD is derived from the hemp plant (which is related to the marijuana plant) and has been used to help alleviate the symptoms of many conditions or issues such as epilepsy and MS, along with potentially helping to reduce depression, anxiety, acne, sleeplessness and more. Many studies have tested the use of CBD for other medical conditions and it has been found to somewhat help with insomnia, Parkinson's symptoms, among others, although more research is needed.
*Luna & Leaf 30% CBD Oil (£118)
I have been interested in the claims surrounding CBD and it's effectiveness in terms of anxiety as well as sleep issues, both of which I have been trying to manage for years. I was very excited to try the Luna and Leaf CBD oil which was very kindly sent to me along with a journal, heavenly scented lavender bath bombs and an eye mask.

Luna and Leaf have a trio of CBD oils available, ranging in percentage of CBD, from 10% to 30%, increasing in price with the higher percentage of CBD included. The oils are all legal in the UK, vegan friendly and organic - it contains organic coconut oil, which has many benefits of its own. To use, you spray the oil under the tongue (between one to three sprays) and each bottle contains approximately 83 sprays.

I've been using one spray of the 30% CBD oil before bed almost every evening for the past couple of weeks - although I did forget to use it a few times! Using the oil itself is a quick and easy process and thankfully the oil is flavourless so there is no unpleasant flavour or aftertaste, in my opinion. My hope for the oil was to help reduce anxious feelings and to help me sleep a little better and overall I think it has, although I will definitely need to use it more and consistently to achieve more apparent and noticeable results.

While I haven't noticed a huge difference, I do love the process of using the oil as part of my evening ritual and it has provided a slight calming effect which is a feeling, as a naturally very anxious person, isn't very common for me. My only negative is the bottle leaks very slightly, which might be a problem caused by shipping, but other than that I'm happy with the oil so far and I will definitely continue to use the oil to hopefully experience more of the benefits with time.

Have you tried CBD? Will you be checking out the range of CBD oils available with Luna & Leaf?

*The Benefits Of Being An Introvert

Collaborative post (AD - Paid)

In much of the Western world, we tend to value extraversion over introversion. As a result of this, those of us who are introverts can sometimes feel as if there is something wrong with us. The truth is that both introverts and extroverts have their benefit in society - if everyone in the world was an extrovert it would be a calamity of people fighting to be heard. Being the quiet person in the room and being able to enjoy one’s own company can have its advantages. Below are just some of the greatest benefits to being an introvert.

Better listening skills
While extroverts spend most of their time in conversations speaking, introverts spend most of their time listening. Introverts tend to make better counsellors because they fully absorb information people are telling them before formulating a response. A lot of extroverts confide in introverts because they trust them to listen. Introverts also tend to be better at keeping other people’s secrets.

More observant
Introverts can also be more observant of the world around them and can sometimes be better at reading people’s emotions. Your typical psychic empath is likely to be an introvert for this reason. Introverts almost always think before they say - they’re less likely to offend someone or embarass themselves by blurting something inappropriate out.

Deeper connections
Due to being good listeners and good observers, introverts are able to form deep connections with others. Introverts aren’t great at small talk, but tend to thrive when engaging in deeper conversations. Introverts often make interesting conversation partners and intimate partners in a relationship. Getting through to introverts is the hard part - many of us take a while to open up and are less trusting. As a result, introverts have smaller friendship circles than extroverts - however the quality of those friendships tends to be greater.

More independent
Introverts get their energy from being alone and can often be much more productive when by themselves. As a result, they can be much more independent, not always relying on the help of others. While this can sometimes result in introverts taking on a little too much themselves, they are never likely to be seen as a burden by others and can be viewed as low maintenance.

Good leaders
While many leaders tend to be extroverted, sometimes the best leaders can be introverts. Introverted leaders tend to listen to the opinions of others and make team members feel more involved in decisions. They can handle a lot of the work themselves without relying on others and can be more observant to individual team members’ needs.

How to be a better introvert
Introversion is often confused with shyness. While most shy people are introverts, not all introverts are shy. Confident introverts are able to use their listening skills, observing skills, deep connectedness, independence and leadership skills to benefit society by being great counsellors and engaging conversationalists. By learning to be confident in one’s own ability and one’s own opinions (while still having the same awareness of others), you can lead a very successful life as an introvert.

Autumn Wellbeing with Lighthouse Clothing

Monday, November 23, 2020
Autumn is my favourite season for so many reasons; the beautiful changing colours, cosy clothing, comforting hot drinks and a wonderful chill in the air but the autumn and winter months can also be a time of the year that includes SAD or seasonal affective disorder as well as a general gloomy feeling. However, there are lots of wonderful aspects of autumn and seasonal activities that can boost your wellbeing such as shinrin-yoku - the Japanese concept of 'forest bathing'.
The idea of forest bathing was created in Japan in the 1980s and has become an integral aspect of the Japanese approach to healthcare and wellbeing ever since (Japan has one of the highest life expectancies in the world). Various studies, conducted in Korea and Japan, have found that spending time in nature has a calming effect on the nervous system, can reduce stress and anger, help to manage anxiety and also lower blood pressure - even after only a short time spend surrounded by nature. I love spending time on autumnal walks and it is definitely something I've missed during lockdown so I will be taking up the forest bathing as often as I can.
*Lighthouse Iona Coat - Khaki (£59.95)
We mustn't let the gloomy and constantly rainy English weather prevent us from forest bathing and it's many benefits! A durable, waterproof coat is all that is needed, well perhaps a pair of boots and a cosy jumper too. I was very kindly sent the very warm and toasty 'Iona' coat from the lovely people over at Lighthouse Clothing which is ideal for the damp autumn weather we've been having recently in Manchester, although to be honest, it is like this for most of the year!

The Iona coat features a cute striped lining which is insulated, super soft and padded to keep you warm on your forest bathing adventures. It is also waterproof (essential year round in Manchester), windproof and breathable. If the coat wasn't practical enough already, it has two large pockets and a secure internal pocket with a zip for your valuables.

I adore the colour of this coat, it is an autumnal dusky moss green that is perfect when paired with a tshirt, black jeans and boots. I also love the cut which is much more flattering than most waterproof coats! I opted for a UK 8 and it fits me perfectly; additionally the coat length and sleeve length are fantastic too, even though I'm very petite.

It is a perfect practical and cosy waterproof coat that is also flattering in its shape, unique in its colour and ideal for autumnal walks in the forest. I have many coats and jackets (it's one of those things I can never have enough of) and this one is by far my favourite practical coat. I couldn't be happier with my new and cosy coat and I'd highly recommend it - it would also make a great practical gift this Christmas. Check out Lighthouse for more gorgeous coats as well as a range of womens, mens and childrens clothing.

What do you think of the Iona coat from Lighthouse? Will you be taking part in any forest bathing this autumn?

Collaborative post (gifted)

Black Friday is just around the corner, with a variety of stores starting their sales early this year which has been tempting me to spend! Thankfully during the first lockdown I didn't spend very much (apart from reduced e-books and a few essentials) so now that Black Friday and Christmas are fast approaching, my wish list has started to increase and my resolve to reduce my spending is crumbling!

Christmas Clothing
As well as a range of soft and cosy knitwear that is always on my wish list at this time of the year, I also have my eye on a few sparkly tops and shiny tops that I think would be a great festive options for Christmas Day. Goddiva is a fantastic site for all of your festive and New Years celebrations as they offer a range of beautiful dresses, sequinned tops and accessories as well as a selection of beauty items, gift ideas and occasion wear.

Beauty & Wellness
My wish list for all things beauty, skincare and wellness is a little ridiculous this year as there are so many amazing Christmas gift sets on sale currently. One bundle deal that I've been interested in for quite a while is the Neom Wellbeing Pod Collection which is an essential oil diffuser accompanied by their blend of essential oils. Additionally, there are a couple of items from Temple Spa on my list including cream foundation base, along with the 'stoke of genius' mascara, the latter I've tried before and loved.

Which products, clothes or gift sets are on your current wish list?

*Switching To A Freelance Career

Sunday, November 15, 2020

This is a sponsored post (AD)

If you've been following my blog for a while then you may know that I started blogging back in 2012 and at the time it was an outlet for my thoughts and opinions on the beauty and skincare products I was using. However, it has evolved into much more, including my main form of income and while I am incredibly happy with the progress of my blog, it wasn't something I ever imagined I'd do or be able to earn money from.

I have a psychology degree and freelancing writing was a career I hadn't even thought of at the time; I never thought I'd be paid for blog posts or articles I'd write (although I am very grateful for all of the brands, PR companies and magazines I've worked with over the past seven or so years). While I didn't set out to be a freelance writer, it came naturally to me and it was an organic progression from my blog. I love what I do (I'm currently looking at other career paths currently though or study options alongside freelancing) but it has had it's ups and downs. In today's post I wanted to share some of the resources I'd recommend and tips for those wanting to switch to a freelance career or those who want to add a freelance opinion in addition to a 9 to 5 job.

Online Distance Learning
Online learning is becoming even more popular during lockdown when most people are spending much more time at home. If you are thinking of switching from your 9 to 5 job or if you want to add on a freelance option to your current career, then gaining the skills you'll need beforehand is a great place to start. There are so many online courses that could be help start your freelance career (whether you want to explore freelance writing, photography, journalism or marketing, for example) including social media, writing, photography and business courses, among others.

However, the freelance breakthrough course provided by The Blackford Centre is a fantastic all-in-one beginners guide to learning the basics of switching to a freelance career which is something I wish I'd had back when I started my blog in 2012 - I had no idea what to do, especially when blogger and brand collaborations started a few years later and there are still things I'm learning eight years on! The course covers 14 different modules on topics including: freelancing essentials, managing your projects, setting your rates, how to get repeat business and much more. Within each module there are a range of topics as well as a task at the end of each section, followed by a final exam at the end of the course. The breakthrough freelance course also comes with a certificate when you've successfully finished the course which would be a great addition to any CV and your freelance portfolio or media kit.

The Blackford Centre is an online learning website with such a wide variety of courses from anatomy and physiology, criminology, counselling, event planning and digital marketing as well as a few more niche options that I haven't seen on any other online learning website such as dog grooming, dog training, private investigation and street photography. There are many options you could pursue based on your interests, future job prospects or new career. I'm personally most interested in the floristry, copy writing and creative writing courses based on my hobbies and interests.

Home-study courses, such as those available with The Blackford Centre, are fantastic for so many reason. For example, you can study at your own time and pace within the comfort of your own home, you can receive an accreditation that you can add to your CV, all of the courses are very affordable, you receive online study material along with a printed edition and you have a 60 day money back guarantee with The Blackford Centre, which gives you plenty of time to decide whether the course is right for you and your current career path or new freelance career.

Tips
  • Plan Ahead: Along with learning new skills and having the basics, planning ahead before any career switch is important; including when you want to make the change, finances, a potential list of clients and project or article ideas, to name a few. Create a spreadsheet, write lists, brainstorm ideas - I personally find that writing down ideas and lists is key to staying organised and productive while working from home.
  • Make A Career Out Of Your Hobbies: Starting a new business or freelance career can be daunting so why not look into ways of making your hobby into a career or additional project; whether it's crafting, calligraphy, photography or poetry. Find a passion, learn new skills to help promote and sell your work or ideas and have a little patience.
  • Patience: When I started my blog and freelance career I never thought I'd earn any money from it but with time, dedication and patience, the blog opportunities and work started to appear. I think there's a misconception about bloggers or freelance writers, that it is an easy job but getting to the stage of working with brands/PRs consistently and having a set rate, is difficult!
  • Network and Promote: Self promotion can feel a little awkward and it's something I've experienced and had to try and overcome as a blogger and freelance writer. Creating social media accounts, a blog and a media kit or freelance portfolio of your work and sharing with potential clients can be a great way of drawing interest and work. Don't be shy to promote your hard work or ask for your worth.
  • Gain Relevant Experience or Skills: Online learning courses, an internship or part time job in the area you want to freelance in might be a good opportunity to gain the new skills and experience you'll need. Skills such as being able to use photoshop, proofreading and writing can all be improved with online courses, time and practice.
  • Taxes: There are many aspects of freelancing and blogging that aren't as glamorous as events and PR mail - those aspects include taxes. The self assessment tax form is something I dread to fill out each year and that is solely because it can be quite (ermmm...very) confusing but if you earn any money from blogging or freelancing (even if it is a tiny amount over the year), you need to let the government know.

Are you a freelancer? Have you participated in any online learning courses?
