Award Winning Italian Wine from Independent Wine

Sunday, November 08, 2020
Over the summer I was very kindly introduced to a new online wine shop and their fantastic selection of Italian wine. Independent Wine is an Edinburgh based wine shop (I adore Edinburgh!) and they have a great award winning red and white wine, along with rose, whisky and more, to choose from. I've reviewed a few bottles from their Italian red and white wine range, visit my previous posts with Independent Wine for more reviews. As aways you can see sneak peeks of my upcoming posts and my blogger mail if you follow me on Instagram (@ofbeautyand).
*306 Biologico Nero d’Avola 2017 | Sicilia DOC | Decanter Silver Medal (£18.19)
The first award winning wine from Independent Wine is produced in an organic micro-winery based in Sicily, in the province of Trapani. The grapes are grown in soil containing limestone and clay, a soil composition known to produce excellent wine. Nero d'Avola is the most important grape in Sicily and Salvatore increases the nutrients within the grapes by removing half of the bunches from his vines which means that the remaining grapes are full of a rich concentrated flavour, that definitely gives the wine a rich and full flavour.

It is a deep red colour with tasting notes of redcurrant, cranberry, red cherry and spices as well as scents of leather, black pepper and cedar. It is a dry wine with distinctly deep and full bodied flavour that remains smooth and moreish. I typically find that red wine is a little too strong for my personal tastes but this one is delicious. I think it would be a fantastic rich red wine for the upcoming festive season! Speaking of which, I have a few Christmas gift guides coming soon so stay tuned for those.
*Viognier 2016, Villa Pinciana | Maremma Toscana DOC (£23.78)
The second and final award winning wine featured in today's post is grown for the Villa Pinciana winery which stretches across the hills in southern Tuscany. The region features a red clay-based soil and sea breeze, creating a unique grape growing environment. The winemakers at Villa Pinciana use Viognier grapes within premium blends but they've produced a 100% Viognier wine which won the Decanter Silver Medal in 2018. Following on from their success, they produced a 100% Viognier in a limited batch of only 1,300 bottles per year.

A golden pale colour, the wine contains notes of grapefruit, golden apple and acadia with hints of white flowers, dried apricots and almonds. It is a very refreshing, light white wine that I think may be my favourite of the selection of Italian wine that I have been very kindly sent from Independent Wine, only closely followed by MalvirĂ  Saglietto Arneis 2016. It is suggested the wine is paired with chicken, scallops or key lime pie and sorbet; I can definitely imagine it working well with the latter!

I cannot recommend Independent Wine enough, especially if you are a beginner when it comes to the vast variety of wine available as they have an amazing selection focusing on award winning Italian wine - you can't go wrong. Also, visit their blog for more information and for their guides on which Italian wines to gift this Christmas.

Have you tried either of these? Have you visited the Independent Wine site or blog?
