Behind The Blog: General Q+A

Friday, May 22, 2015
I asked on my blog's 3rd birthday giveaway post for questions about anything and I would answer them in a general Q&A post! I received quite a lot of blogging questions, some of which I have already answered or I added to my two blogging Q&A posts (here) and (here).

1. I'd love to know how you found the transition into becoming a vegetarian! (question from Blushhx)

I became a vegetarian almost 11 years ago so it is a little difficult to remember but I don't think I found it too difficult or strange as I didn't like a lot of meat or fish to begin with. The only meat/fish I liked as bacon, salmon and sausages which I would have with pasta. So when I became a vegetarian I would just have the same pasta/sauce without the meat *in the first few years I actually didn't eat a lot of veggies ironically*

2. What made you chose to be veggie? (question from Fizzy Peaches)

I watched a video online of how some animals were being killed for meat consumption and it made me realise at the age of 11/12 that meat on my plate once came from living, breathing animals and I didn't want them to die just so I could eat meat/fish.

3. What is your daily routine cleaning of the face? 5 essential in your bag? (question from Paulina Rios

My skin care routine changes daily depending on my skin, what I'm doing that day, seasonal factors and if I have new products to try. I usually don't use a cleanser in the morning, I just use water or a toner then my serums and moisturisers. I usually fully cleanse my face in the evening. My five handbag essentials would be: lip balms, bobbles/hair ties, mini perfume, hand cream and nail files.

4. I am a psychology student and I want to know, what do you love the most about the subject? (question from Alexandra)

I love how diverse the topic of psychology is, from the criminology side of it to child cognitive development and the acquisition of language. I loved it since A level and I loved my three years at university studying psychological studies! I wish I could go back and do it again!

5. What's your favourite thing about blogging? (question from Shreya

The blogging community and the feedback/communication with other bloggers and readers. It makes me feel as though I have this online group of friends with the same interests and hobbies as me.

6. What's your favourite perfume? (question from Dawn)

My all time favourite perfume is Prada Infusion D'Iris, it was super expensive at the time *$100* but I love it and it is very nostalgic to me as it reminds me of holidays in Italy.

7. What is your one top tip for looking after your skin? (question from Zoe Lianne)

Don't touch your face! This is especially important if you have eczema as I do. Itching eczema although it is so tempting as eczema can be incredibly itchy but it just makes everything worse.

8. What advice would you give to someone who is just starting out blogging? (question from Kez)

I would say, don't expect it to be easy, it takes a lot of dedication, time and effort; also learn to use your camera and maybe look into pre-made or custom blog designs as they can be amazing and reasonably priced.

9. I'd love to know more about what made you become a vegetarian and what are your views on non-vegetarians (questions from helen x)

I became a vegetarian for the reasons in question two. I am the only vegetarian in my family (my grandad is a pescatarian, he eats fish but not meat) and my friends eat meat so I am surrounded by it so it doesn't really bother me too much. However, one thing I cannot stand about some non-vegetarians is the ignorance about where their fish/meat comes from; some people don't want to know that their food comes from once happily living animals and that kind of annoys the hell out of me personally.

10. What are the best foods to eat more of to give you great skin? (question from Rosie Dunningham)

Not actually food but I have found that since drinking green tea and herbal tea in general my skin has become brighter, more healthy/plumped and clearer (although blemishes/spots are not a problem for me personally). Also drinking water and getting your five a day really helps!

11. If you had your own make-up line what would you call it? (question from Macen)

Oh, that is an interesting question! I have no idea, maybe something with 'natural' in the name as I would want it to be more natural/eco and to be suitable for super sensitive skin types.

12. What is your favourite high street/high end beauty brand? If you could only shop at one place for the rest of your life where would you choose? (questions from lillies and lip balm)

My favourite high street brand would be Makeup Revolution, Kiko or Rimmel - I couldn't pick just one! My favourite higher end brand would either be Dior or Burberry. For makeup I would shop at Boots and for clothing probably Newlook or Zara or Asos...

13. What's your favourite pizza toppings? (question from Being Ashleigh - Lifestyle and Fashion blog)

CHEESE, anything cheesy and also mushrooms! My favourite pizza ever is the Dominos medium cheese and tomato pizza with the cheese stuffed crust *drools* with the heavenly garlic/herb dip! I'm hungry now and I want Dominos!

14.  What do you use to help treat your eczema? (question from Grace Slocombe)

I have a entire post dedicated to my eczema 'story' and the products I use for the eczema on my face and on my hand (here). I use Protopic for my face and I use Betnovate for my body eczema.

15. I'd love to know what made you become a vegetarian! (question from Hannerking)

I answered this in question two and I have to say everyone always asks me 'did you just wake up and want to be a vegetarian?' as if most people would just wake up and make such a massive life change! But it was a big change and in hindsight I should have waited as children/teens need protein to grow and develop.

16. Do you like living in your country? You were in Russia? If you had the opportunity, how would you have called your own brand of cosmetics or clothing? (questions from Miranda Beauty World)

I do love living in England, it is a relatively stable, safe and happy place to live although as with anywhere there are negative aspects such as crime etc. I adore english history and the heritage we have. I have been to Saint Petersburg back in 2013 and I loved it! I have a blog post about my time there, click here. Again as with question 11, I have no idea, it would be amazing to have my own cosmetics or petite clothing line though!

17. What your favourite vegetarian meal? (question from Winda)

Pasta, anything with pasta. I'm the pasta queen or so my parents call me as I am constantly eating it. My favourite vegetarian meal would include pasta, green veggies in a creamy herb sauce which is a staple meal for me.

18.
Would you rather only use one eyeshadow color or one lip color for the rest of your life? (question from Petra Black)

One lip colour as I am definitely more adventurous with my eyeshadow looks than my lip colour!

19. What music genre do you identify yourself most? (question from Silvia Bia)

I like so many music genres from classical to punk, metal, alternative and indie. I don't really identify with one specific genre.

20. What is a must-have for blogging that most people don't think about?

A large SD card, a bit of an unusual thing to say but it definitely helps to have a good SD card (or whichever card your camera takes) with a large storage capacity. Also blue tac, it's great for positioning products to be photographed!

Phew, there were more questions but I didn't want this post to be even longer! If you have any questions at all leave them below and I will answer them as soon as possible.

Three Years Of Blogging: Q+A Part Two

Tuesday, May 12, 2015
I received more questions than I thought I would so I have had to split the questions into two posts. If you haven't seen the first post, click here

1.  If you could go back to day one of your blog, would you do anything differently? (question from Lay It Bare Lifestyle)

I would learn how to use my camera and how to edit photographs! Most of my photos from the early days of my blog were cringingly embarrassing and I wish I could go back and change that! Also I would not add my blog name to my photographs, it looks amateurish (to me) and no-one would have wanted to steal my photographs back then anyway!

2. How do you keep your blog posts fresh? (question from Ashleigh's World)

I like to think I keep my blog fresh and different as I love to talk about so many different topics from lifestyle, fashion/ootd and posts about all things beauty, even hair removal and being a vegetarian! Inspiration from other bloggers, magazines, products, seasons and social media helps to my blog ideas flowing.

3. What are the brands you have loved working with the most? (question from Mon Petit Billet)

So far I have loved working with (individually and through PR's): Makeup Revolution, Newlook, Jurlique, Manuka Yoga, Clarins, Debenhams, Essence, Brodie and Stone and so many more! I am so lucky and grateful that I have been able to work with a lot of brands, some of which I have loved since I was a teen! You can check out the list of brands I've had the pleasure of working with, here.

4. Advice for new bloggers, how would you say you can get your blog seen by more people?  (question by This Is She Dates)

Here are my personal pointers to a good basic blog to start with and how to get more traffic as a blog beginner; although keep in mind that it can be a very slow process and I am definitely not an 'expert' in this topic:

- A simple but unique blog design and clear bright photography will always attract readers

- Comment on other peoples blogs (don't spam though) as it has personally brought so much more traffic/page views and followers to my blog

- Blog about what you are passionate about

- Make it easy for your readers to find your social media icons so they can follow if they want to

- Link your blog to all of your social media accounts and join in with twitter chats, follow bloggers and generally just interact

5. What has kept you motivated these past years? What tips would you give a beginner blogger? (question from Neenys Little Blog)

My personal motivating factors are: wanting to grow my blog and I want to share my opinions of all things beauty! Reading other blogs keeps me motivated too! I've already noted some tips of blog beginners above but another point I would emphasise is not to give up!

6. What is your favourite blog post type to read? (question from Haileys Workshop)

I love reading reviews, bloggers are fantastic enablers! I have bought quite a lot of makeup and some accessories based on bloggers reviews and recommendations. I also love reading hauls, especially Primark hauls as it can be a great way of seeing what stock they sell currently.

7. Did you have any initial misconceptions about blogging or the blogging community? (question from Life Of a Thinker

When I started my blog I didn't know about the blogging community or about blogging generally. Blogging wasn't nearly was big/popular as it is now, it was a small community so I did't really have any misconceptions.

8. What's the best thing about blogging... please name just ONE (question from Suede and Symphony)

That's a difficult question as there are so many amazing things about blogging but I would have to say: the blogging community. The blogging community is SO supportive, whether I reached a new blogging milestone or if I'm having a bad day, the blogging community is always there to help, support and celebrate. Also twitter chats are a great way of talking to bloggers with the same interests - I always look forward to them, especially the #lbloggers chat!

9. Why did you start your blog? (question from Fizzy Peaches

I have received this questions about so many times on social media and on my giveaway post (here). I started my blog because I wrote on review websites. I loved writing about beauty products and testing products so starting my own blog was a natural progression for me - although I didn't think about what having my own blog would entail at the time.

10. What piece of advice would you give to me as a fellow blogger either about my own blog or blogging in general (question from Beauty Queen UK)

My advice for bloggers would be: keep doing what you are doing, don’t get disheatened by negative comments, keep supporting one another and don’t be scared to contact other bloggers to chat/ask questions. Also my advice for everyone (as photography is a passion of mine) is to experiment with your camera, try different settings and locations as well as props/lighting.

If you have any other questions for me about blogging (or anything else) leave them in the comments below and I will reply as soon as possible - make sure you click the box next to the comment section to receive an email when I reply to your comment!

Month in Photos: April 2015 & Thank You

Tuesday, April 28, 2015
I haven't published a 'month in photos' post for SO long as I just haven't had a space in my blogging schedule, other posts just take precedence over month in photos posts. This month has consisted of baking (lots of baking), moon photos, missing amazing space/weather/moon events, exciting brand collaborations, meeting up with friends and family, spring cleaning and really bad hayfever and an eczema flare up! Also the best news, I reached over 2,000 followers on bloglovin yesterday!

Over the past couple of months we have had a solar eclipse, the northern lights and the lyrid meteor shower - I missed ALL of them! I would have loved to see any of them and I'm so jealous of all the amazing photos that appeared on social media from Manchester/Northern England showing these amazing space/weather events *cries forever*. Although I have managed to get a few gorgeous photos of the moon and venus, if you follow me on Instagram (heathernixon4) you may have seen them already.

I have been lucky enough to work with some amazing brands this month such as House of Fraser (here), Jurlique (here), Flamingo Gifts (here) and Manuka Yoga (here) as well as others. I have a few more exciting brand collaborations soon and I'm particularly excited about a Newlook feature which may be live in May.

My diet and healthy eating was kind of left behind this month as I've made three lemon meringue pies and I ate almost half each time...oops. They aren't super unhealthy but they are definitely not health food by any stretch of the imagination! I've also been loving fries, Quorn nuggets, Ferrero Rocher chocolates and lattes so much more this month. Healthy eating starts tomorrow...maybe.

For me the upcoming month is going to be a little busier and exciting as I have a couple of friends birthday parties, girly catch ups and shopping trips planned. Sadly one of my best friends is moving away in May so we are having a leaving party. Also in May I will have been a vegetarian for...11 YEARS, I cannot believe it has gone by so quickly.

Just a little note: The Will of Iron triathlon week is starting on the 2nd May to 8th May but you can take part in the event all year round. It costs £25 to take part in the triathlon. Money raised all year round goes to Willow a charity that provides special days for seriously ill people aged 16 - 40. I'm not taking part this year as basicallyI have no stamina and I probably wouldn't finish - although you can take part as part of a team!

Last but not least I wanted to say thank you to everyone that reads, comments and follows my little blog. Blogging is a hobby that I love so much! When I started blogging I had no idea how much it would mean to me almost three years down the line. My blog will be 3 years old in May *cries like a proud parent* and I'm going to have a big international beauty giveaway to celebrate so stay tuned.

What were your highlights of April? What are your looking forward to in May?
