*My Driving Experiences

I have been driving for almost two years (it will be two years next month) and I've learnt so much not only while learning to drive but afterwards too. As it's almost two years, I thought I'd share some of my experiences of learning to drive, what it's like after passing your test and about the other aspects of driving such as car maintenance.

Learning To Drive
Learning to drive was something I kept putting off as it seemed so daunting at the time so I only started learning at the age of 24 which isn't the typical age to learn, usually it's much sooner but learning to drive in the UK is pretty expensive! I found an instructor that taught a friend and he was very firm but fair which I think is a great way to be for a driving instructor.

I passed my driving test the second time around after a very nerve wracking first test! I've posted about my full and in-depth experiences already on my blog but the main tips I would pass on would be: be patient as there's going to be lots of waiting, whether it's waiting for an instructor to fit you in, waiting lists for tests or waiting to get a re-test. I'd also say that you shouldn't be too hard on yourself when you are learning because you are learning!

Passing
Passing your theory and your practical driving test is such a great feeling of relief! When the examiner said that I'd passed, I couldn't believe it at first as it just didn't seem possible for some reason. Passing and having that certificate makes all of the stress, doubts and tears (in my case there were tears while learning to drive!) all worth it. However, I think one thing that people do when they've passed and are more confident is to become complacent and take more risks which is something you should never do when driving - it can not only affect your life but passengers lives and the lives of other drivers so don't become complacent.

Maintenance
One aspect of being a driver is to be aware of the safety or health of the car which is something I never really understood or even thought of before passing. If I'm driving on my own then I need to know what certain lights mean, if the car behaves in a certain way or if it breaks down, then I need to be able to fix it or know what to do. After passing your test, there's still so much to learn, particularly when it comes to car maintenance but thankfully in the UK it is easy to keep on top of the general health and safety of your car with MOT testing and hopefully you'll have a car that has passed at the end of it.

Can you drive? If you can, how was your experience of learning to drive?
