Italy isn’t exactly a secret holiday destination, although it does have a number of hidden gems for those looking to step away from the popular hotspots. Tucked away from tourists in a spectacular setting you will find Abruzzo. Although it reels in a good number of tourists a year, there is plenty to see and explore during your stay which should be less crowded.

This region of Italy is home to a shimmering coastline, glistening lakes, snowy mountains and an incredible choice of food and, of course, wine. Abruzzo boasts uncrowded, charming spots to relax, while also offering easy access by a scenic train ride to the capital where you can get your ‘traditional tourist’ fix. So, if you are looking for an Italian holiday with a difference, then we have put together a guide on some of the best places to see and experience during your stay.

Places to See
Abruzzo is known to be untamed, wild and mostly untouched meaning that there are a whole host magnificent places to see. Lake Scanno is the largest natural lake in Abruzzo and is a tranquil and picturesque place. The emerald green water and fresh mountain air are perfect for relaxation, but, if you’re feeling more adventurous, take a dip in the water or hire a paddle boat or bike to explore the lake further.

Abruzzo is a region in Italy that really does have it all when it comes to landscapes with its dominating mountain range, mirror-like lakes and a breathtaking stretch of coastline there is plenty to explore. The coast found here has miles of sandy beaches and bays as well as numerous historical villages and towns, perfect for evening meals, shopping and exploration.

Food and Drink
We all know that Italy is renowned for its food and wine, and Abruzzo is no exception. With freshly caught seafood full of wholesome flavours, there is an abundance of fresh and local produce available. There is also a wide range of food festivals, which are put on during the year, and taking the time to venture to one of these will let you see how passionate and proud the Italian’s are about their foods and drinks! It has really become a foodie’s ideal place, as there is such a wide range of dishes which are fresh and full of flavour on offer. You will even have the chance to see the vineyards and olive trees dotted around the region.

Highlights
It goes without saying that a visit to the coastline should be near to the top of your list as Abruzzo is home to an array of pristine beaches. If you are looking to delve into some history, this region is not short of quaint villages, castles and forts. There will be nothing better than taking time to amble through the narrow streets of a traditional Italian village and grabbing a bite to eat and something to drink.

There is something incredibly relaxing and exciting about the thought of heading to a completely different part of Italy than some of the main tourist hotspots. There is an abundance of wonderful sights to see and places to explore, and maybe more importantly, spectacular beaches to relax on. Whether you are looking at staying in holiday villas in Abruzzo or elsewhere, this region can serve as a perfect holiday destination for all types of travellers.

Have you visit Abruzzo or Italy in general? I've been lucky enough to visit quite a few cities in Italy but now I need to visit Abruzzo and Lake Scanno!
