Staying Motivated While Working From Home

Sometimes working in a crowded office isn’t the best course of action, it might be too noisy and harder to focus, stopping you from working effectively. Alternatively, you might run your business from home, where being somewhere much more comfortable often brings its own distractions. Office designers, Penketh Group explain the best ways to avoid distraction and remain motivated while working from home.

Dedicated work space
The best way to work from home is in a dedicated area. In front of the TV provides too many distractions, you need to be able to work in peace and quiet. A home office is the perfect solution for this, not only is it better equipped for you to do your job, but it also helps to create a divide between work and being at home. This goes some way to helping you avoid bringing any stress from work ‘home’ with you. Your office or work should be separate from the rest of your home, a dedicated room for example. Try to avoid it being part of a communal area or living space as if you aren’t home alone this could cause distractions and hinder your ability to work. You should aim to work somewhere free from hustle and bustle, and despite being at home stick to the same sort of routine you would have in the office, break times, lunch, etc. It helps to keep you in a working mind-set despite being at home.

Clear goal for the day
The best way to remain motivated throughout the day is to set yourself a clear goal. What you need to get done by the time you finish work for the day. In your home office if you have a noticeboard or a whiteboard write the goal down on it. If it’s a larger job break it into smaller more manageable tasks and cross them off as you complete them. Having a set goal gives you something to focus on, this helps massively when organising your time. Letting you work more efficiently and effectively.

Avoiding interruptions
Try not to allow yourself to be distracted by calls and checking emails. Not being in the office (should) give you more peace and quiet allowing you to work without interruption. If you have a big task to complete maybe specify set times to contact you and set aside fixed times during the day for checking emails. This way you can take a quick break from your work while still being contactable if necessary. The key to motivation when working from home is ensuring you set yourself up properly for completing a task, from peace and quiet to clear goals and a dedicated workspace. Getting yourself organised can work wonders on your productivity.

  5. These are some great tips! I work from home and recently gave up my office for a bigger bedroom for Ada. Her old bedroom is just big enough to fit my stock in, so I'm currently without a desk space and finding my productivity is suffering so much for it!

A good tip I heard about working from home is to work upstairs and leave your phone downstairs, so you're not constantly scrolling and distracted!

  8. I do everything, except for setting a goal for the day. That sounds like a great idea, because I set goals for the long term, not the short term ^_^

  16. I'd love a dedicated workspace or room in the house were I could write. There's just too many distractions & my blog usually takes a back seat to housework.
