Winterproof Your Work Wardrobe

When creating a stylish look that’s right for your workplace, a big factor that can have an impact on your choice of outfits are the changing seasons. This is especially the case at this time of year when temperatures start to drop and the everyday outdoor colours of trees and parks dramatically change.

When shopping for outfits to suit colder months, whether you choose to browse the Zaras and Topshops of the high street, or prefer to search online, like via Asos or a clothing supplier like Simon Jersey workwear, there are different things to think about. You should ensure your workwear is practical and keeps you warm on your way to and from work, all while retaining a sense of style that helps you look the part in the office. With all this in mind, here are some key ways to ensure your workwear is well suited to colder seasons.

Layering
Layering is key when creating workwear during colder months. Not only does it provide a way to keep you warm, it also allows you to put together a range of interesting, stylish and professional looks. Good layering also means you to easily remove a layer of clothes, like when working in a well-heated office, without needing to worry about leaving your desk to strip off in the Ladies. You can then just as quickly wrap up again, like when out in the cold and on your way home after work.

When selecting what clothes to choose for layering, think about including those that are tailored and clean cut. Examples of layered items that can work well include a turtle neck under a classic wrap dress, or a thin, long cardigan over a dress. You could also try an Oxford shirt under a bold high-cut business dress or under a cable knit sweater with trousers.

Style and accessories
The style of the clothes you wear in the office can also change to suit colder seasons. Examples include long sleeved roll, cowl and polo-neck tops. As well as providing a great way to keep the neck warm when out in the cold, polos are set to regain popularity on the high street this year. Such items can also look smart and sophisticated with a pair of slim fit trousers, or a bold midi or kilt-style skirt, teamed up with black tights and a classy pair of Chelsea boots.

Accessories are another essential for a wardrobe suited to colder months. They can add dimension and shape to your layering, such a black belt, with a solid buckle, wrapped around an oversized cardigan. Other accessories, like a double-face or knitted scarf, can be used to add colour to an outfit and give different looks that finishing touch, all while giving you that bit of all-essential extra warmth.

Colour
Finally, colour is crucial when creating a striking look for your work that’s suitable for colder seasons. While a crisp, white collar blouse might look cool and stylish in the summer months, for instance, it could look washed out on pale skin in a sun-sparse season, like winter. When it comes to choosing colours, it’s best to think about wearing darker shades. Black is an obvious choice, but navy, grey, or berry shades can be more flattering on pale skin and create more striking and interesting looks.

You could also try complementing such shades with subtle or bold splashes of colour in your layering. Red is very on trend at the moment so could be a good choice for this. A bold, bright red blazer, for instance, will bring underlaying neutral colours to life and ensure you stand out in the office, even on the dullest of days.

  1. I swear by layers, that way if I get too hot I can take something off rather than suffer all day!

  3. I struggle with adding colour to my wardrobe, I've become so comfortable with being a monochrome kind of gal that it just doesn't come naturally anymore! I am a sucker for a good cosy winter coat though, nothing better than walking round feeling like you're wrapped in a blanket, haha!

  17. I work in an office but luckily it's quite relaxed here, so I just stick to jeans with converse and a t shirt in Spring/Summer and then jeans with boots and jumpers in Autumn/Winter xo

  21. Layering is definitely the best tip for colder months! Luckily my office is business casual so I don't struggle too much with outfits. But I love to have a good roundup of coats to layer over that aren't uncomfortable to sit in when I'm cold either! I do love once the weather gets colder as it means boot wearing season :)
