Makeup Memories: 90s + 00s *prepare to cringe*

Beauty and makeup products from the 90s and 00s
Oh the 90's, a simpler time when all you had to worry about was which of your favourite boy bands songs you would learn the moves to for the disco or which body shimmer to apply...Ok, some of the 90's trends were a little embarrassing but today we are going to take a trip down memory lane together to remember all of the beauty products we were obsessed with in the 90's and 00's - if you don't remember any of these products then you probably weren't there *lucky you*

Let's skip over getting our hair ripped out because the no tangles shampoo didn't work and the Babyliss twist thing screwed up our hair into a birds nest of tangles and go right to crimping...possibly the worst and most unattractive hair style/tool ever but we all glammed up and went to the school disco with a mane crimped within an inch of it's life. I actually used to love crimping my hair *I have no doubt that it would have looked horrendous and even more frizzy than it usually did* and I'm pretty sure I had the purple one in the college above. Sticking with the hair theme, butterfly clips (either bejewelled with enough glitter and rhinestones to make Dolly Parton jealous or plain) were all the rage in my school. As were scrunchies  and those hair ties with hard plastic balls on both ends that would fracture your skull every time you turned your head. Every time we went to a Boots I would try and persuade my mum to get me the Garnier highlights hair kit, I never did get those sunkissed fake highlights. It was probably for the best.

Now speaking of glitter, body shimmer and body glitter which was basically glue with sparkle in it was a massive trend for 90's school girls and I was no exception because nothing is more attractive or cool than sticky green body shimmer, right...right. Did anyone else love the GlitterBabes range from Boots in the 90's, I had all of their polishes. I also had the Boots own cucumber range which was my 'skincare range' when I was about 13. As well as glitter, the 90's was a time for stick on body jewels which I remember very vividly in my nightmares along with mood rings, frilly gingham socks and velvet alicebands with my name in glitter on it.

Onto the makeup, I used to get every single Sabrinas Secrets magazine when they came out in our newsagents and each week they had a new makeup item and you had a fancy plastic box makeup box to put them in - I wish I had these magazines and makeup now! Milk Bubble Tea has talked out them in one of her posts, here. In the late 90's my on going obsession with lip balm began with Lip Smackers which are still going and still taste like plastic but I love them along with The Body Shop lip butters in the 00's. Also I used to LOVE the Rimmel Sweet Jelly Glosses, I had the clear one and I thought I was so grown up using lip gloss.

Impulse sprays, I must have gone through countless bottles of Impulse body sprays! Just looking at the image of them above brings back embarrassing school days when we had PE *shudders* and the girls toilets in my high school was just a cloud of Impulse scents all of which were disgusting and strong enough to mask anything!

In the 00's, I used the Natural Collection tinted moisturiser and powders constantly! I had a weird makeup obsession in the 00's and from the age of 13 - 15 where I just applied the Rimmel Kohl Pencil in Black on my lower waterline; I don't know why and I was labelled as a 'goth/punk' for doing it but it meant that I met people who would become fantastic friends, I discovered the amazing music genre that is metal and I was able to hang out in the 'mosh pit' area of our school - it was just the area behind the history building. Did anyone else have those trousers in the 00's that had buckles and straps, I had a blue pair and a black pair *cringe*.

Do you have any 90's nostalgia to share? To readers outside of the UK, did you have these products in the 90's?

  7. My mother was really strict and wouldn't let me use any of these trends when I was little which I feel like I missed out on but I had all the butterfly clips and had the ones that bounced and I was convinced I could fly away when I wore them.

  12. Oh the hair crimping! And the ridiculous blonde streaks in my brown hair, courtesy of 'Sun In' spray. And since we are on the subject of makeup, the unfortunate brown lip liner and lighter brown lipstick. My god, thanks to everything holy, there was no Instagram!

    1. I always wanted that Sun In stuff but I opted for the ridiculous lemon juice in the hair and sit in the sun all day method - obviously it didn't work on my dark brown hair! x

  13. The butterfly mini-clamps were all the rage when I was in high school! All the girls in school had them. Glad I didn't have them, as I would be one more girl wearing it! Hahaha.
